Visa Administrative Hurdles Disrupt Tournament Preparations

The South African men’s national soccer team has been forced to reschedule its flight to Mexico following complications with visa documentation, leaving the squad just under two weeks before the start of the World Cup.

The team, known as Bafana Bafana, was scheduled to depart this past Sunday to begin its final phase of preparations for the international tournament. Their primary objective in Mexico City is the inaugural match of the competition, where they are slated to face co-host nation Mexico on June 11.

Government and Official Response

South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie expressed significant frustration regarding the logistical failure. Describing the situation as an “embarrassing” ordeal, he demanded an official explanation from the South African Football Association (SAFA) and insisted that internal accountability measures be implemented. He emphasized that the situation had reflected poorly on the nation.

Later, via social media, Minister McKenzie confirmed a revised departure schedule for Monday, noting the following details regarding the status of the delegation:

  • Most players successfully obtained their travel authorization for the United States.
  • Visas for key personnel—including the assistant coach, the team doctor, the head of security, and a performance analyst—remained pending.

Ongoing Efforts to Resolve Delays

In an official statement released Sunday, SAFA acknowledged the disruption, stating:

“The South African senior men’s national team has experienced challenges regarding visas for some players and officials, and as a result the group could not travel to North America this morning as originally planned.”

The association further noted that they are working continuously to expedite the process to ensure the squad arrives in Mexico City in time for the opening game. While awaiting the resolution of these travel issues, the team is continuing its training regimen in Johannesburg. SAFA scheduled an emergency meeting for Sunday evening to address the lapse and provide further guidance on the team's travel plans.

In the upcoming tournament, South Africa is grouped in Group A alongside the Czech Republic and South Korea.
