Los Angeles Rams star quarterback Matthew Stafford has dismissed any speculation regarding potential friction over the team's decision to use a first-round draft selection on a quarterback. Instead of showing resentment, Stafford has expressed genuine enthusiasm about mentoring rookie Ty Simpson as he settles into the professional environment.
A Professional Relationship Begins
During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Stafford detailed how he is actively integrating Simpson into the team's preparation process. The veteran signal-caller noted that he is committed to providing guidance in both the meeting rooms and on the practice field.
«I'm in there with him in the meeting room, on the practice field, trying to share as much knowledge as I can. I was a big fan of Ty when he was playing at Alabama,» Stafford remarked.
Mutual Respect from College Days
While the two players were collegiate rivals—with Simpson playing for Alabama and Stafford representing the University of Georgia—there is a deep mutual respect. Stafford humorously acknowledged the irony of their past rivalry, recalling a message he sent to the rookie after the draft:
«I sent him a text after he got drafted and said, 'Really enjoyed watching you play, just that you were in the wrong jersey.' I did enjoy watching him play. He's a talented kid.»
Giving Back to the Next Generation
Stafford emphasized that his willingness to help comes from his own experience as a first-round draft pick. He remembers the veterans who took him under their wing during his early years and views it as his duty to pay that experience forward.
«I wouldn't be in the seat I am now if I didn't have people helping me out along the way, so I'm happy to do that,» Stafford said. «He's been a sponge. He's looking to get better.»
