A Potential Permanent Addition to the South Lawn
Preparations are currently underway on the White House South Lawn for an upcoming mixed martial arts event. President Donald Trump has expressed significant enthusiasm for the June 14 showcase, even suggesting that the massive lighting grid and octagon structure—often referred to as “The Claw”—could remain a permanent feature of the presidential grounds rather than being dismantled after the event concludes.
The Eiffel Tower Comparison
During a discussion on TikTok, the President drew an unusual historical parallel, comparing the temporary sports infrastructure to the origins of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. He noted how a structure originally intended for temporary exhibition ended up becoming a permanent landmark.
“Many don't know that in Paris, France, the Eiffel Tower, 1889, it was built. It was supposed to be taken down immediately after the World's Fair, and then they said, 'You know, we sort of like it. Let's leave it up a little bit longer.' And then they said, 'Let's leave it up longer and longer and longer.' Well, they never took it down. And, you know, we're building something in front of the White House that's quite attractive to a lot of people. It's gonna have the big UFC fight on June 14, and I'm looking at it, and maybe we'll never, ever take it down.”
Whether this statement reflects a genuine policy ambition or is simply a provocative remark aimed at critics of the event remains a subject of speculation.
