A Devastating Loss

Tragedy has overshadowed the professional milestone of Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. On Sunday, reports confirmed that his 16-year-old sister, Eliana, and his stepmother, Patricia, were found deceased in La Guaira, Venezuela. The pair had been missing for over a week following a pair of catastrophic earthquakes that struck the region on June 24.

The Search and Rescue Efforts

Following the disaster, Alfonzo’s father, former MLB player Eliezer Alfonzo Sr., spearheaded an exhaustive search at the site of the hotel where his family had been staying. According to information shared by Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase, the father had secured heavy machinery to assist rescue teams in clearing the debris. While rescue workers were able to locate Eliana’s dog alive on Friday—the same day Patricia’s cell phone was discovered—the search ultimately ended in heartbreak.

Eliezer Sr., who played six seasons in the majors for clubs including the San Francisco Giants and Seattle Mariners, had been with his family at the hotel before departing to manage his team, the Delfines de la Guaira. He had previously expressed uncertainty regarding whether his family members had successfully evacuated the hotel room when the tremors began.

The Impact of the Natural Disaster

The region was devastated by two massive earthquakes occurring in rapid succession on June 24. A 7.2 magnitude quake struck near San Felipe at 6:04 p.m., followed less than a minute later by a second, 7.5 magnitude event. As of Saturday, reports from The New York Times indicate that the death toll has climbed to over 2,900 people, with approximately 16,600 individuals sustaining injuries.

Professional Journey Amidst Tragedy

Eliezer Alfonzo Jr., 26, is currently in his 10th season of professional baseball. After beginning his journey as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers in 2016 and progressing through the Triple-A level, he signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers last offseason. His impressive .313 batting average with the Oklahoma City Comets this season led to his long-awaited call-up to the major leagues, intended to provide depth behind Dalton Rushing following Will Smith's neck injury.

Despite the immense personal loss, Alfonzo chose to proceed with his MLB debut on Sunday. The rookie took the field wearing a hat inscribed with a tribute to his family. During his first plate appearance, he was met with a heartfelt ovation from the Dodgers faithful in attendance. While the Padres secured a 5-2 victory to prevent a series sweep, the Dodgers remain comfortably atop the NL West standings with a 59-32 record.
