Despite their impressive careers, Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka have rarely faced off on the tennis court. Before Monday, they had only met twice, with each player securing one victory.
Their third meeting took place at the Mutua Madrid Open, offering a chance for one to take the lead in their head-to-head record. The match was tightly contested early on, but Sabalenka found her rhythm in the latter stages, winning in three sets. This gave her a narrow 2-1 advantage in their rivalry and extended her winning streak to 15 matches.
Although Sabalenka entered as the world No. 1, Osaka started stronger. The first set was close, going to a tiebreak, where Osaka prevailed 7-6 to take a 1-0 lead. Sabalenka, however, fought back decisively, winning the second set 6-3 to force a deciding third set.
The final set was initially back-and-forth, with both players trading wins in the first four games. Sabalenka then broke the pattern in the fifth game, taking a 3-2 lead. From there, she dominated, winning the next three games to close out the set 6-2 and claim the match.
With this victory, Sabalenka advanced to the quarterfinals, where she will face Hailey Baptiste on Tuesday. The win also highlighted the rarity of their matchups: prior to Monday, they had only met twice, with Osaka winning their 2018 U.S. Open encounter and Sabalenka winning at Indian Wells earlier this year. Sabalenka noted that her rise to the top coincided with Osaka's time away from the sport due to the birth of her daughter. Now that both are active and playing at a high level, fans can expect more thrilling encounters between these two stars.
