Strategic Draft Capital Accumulation

While the 2026 NFL draft is still several weeks away, the landscape of the first round has already taken shape. Currently, five franchises have successfully acquired two first-round selections, positioning themselves to significantly bolster their rosters.

The Miami Dolphins are the most recent addition to this group following their agreement to send wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos. As a result, Miami now possesses the No. 11 overall selection alongside Denver's No. 30 pick.

Breakdown of Teams with Double First-Rounders

Several other clubs have leveraged past trades to double their presence in the first round:

  • New York Jets: Holding the No. 2 overall pick and the No. 16 selection, acquired from the Indianapolis Colts during the Sauce Gardner deal.
  • Dallas Cowboys: In possession of their own No. 12 pick and the No. 20 selection received from the Green Bay Packers in exchange for Micah Parsons.
  • Cleveland Browns: Secured the No. 6 overall pick and the No. 24 selection from the Jacksonville Jaguars, stemming from a previous draft-day trade that allowed Jacksonville to move up for Travis Hunter.
  • Kansas City Chiefs: Armed with their own No. 9 pick and the No. 29 selection, which was part of the Trent McDuffie trade package from the Los Angeles Rams.

It is worth noting that the landscape could have looked different; a potential deal involving the Las Vegas Raiders trading Maxx Crosby to the Baltimore Ravens collapsed, allowing the Ravens to retain their first-round draft asset.

Impact on Rebuilding Efforts

Conversely, five organizations—the Broncos, Falcons, Colts, Packers, and Jaguars—currently find themselves without a pick in the first round. For the teams that have successfully stockpiled multiple first-round selections, this draft serves as a cornerstone for their ongoing roster reconstruction, especially considering that all five teams failed to qualify for the postseason last year.
