Major League Baseball and the Minnesota Twins are investigating an incident where Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran claims a fan told him to kill himself during Tuesday's game. Duran, who has been open about past mental health struggles and a suicide attempt, responded to the alleged remark by making an obscene gesture toward the stands.
"We were made aware of the situation late last night and are looking into it," said Twins executive Dustin Morse. "There’s no place in our game for conduct like that." Duran stated after the game, "Somebody told me to kill myself. I’m used to it at this point... that stuff is still kind of triggering."
In a recent documentary, Duran revealed he attempted to take his own life in 2022. He has faced similar taunts before, including an incident last season in Cleveland. Red Sox manager Alex Cora expressed full support for Duran, stating the organization has his back and praising his courage for speaking publicly about his mental health.
Cora added that the Twins are trying to identify the fan, suggesting that person would likely be banned from future MLB games. Duran, while criticizing his own reaction, emphasized the challenging nature of such comments given his personal history.
