Heat Parting Ways with Rozier
The Miami Heat are reportedly set to release guard Terry Rozier this Friday. According to reports, the decision arrives just before the league deadline for teams to waive players currently on expiring contracts.
A Challenging 2025-26 Season
The 32-year-old athlete has faced a highly controversial season. The issues began when he became the subject of an investigation regarding his conduct during a 2023 game, where he departed early following significant wagers placed against his performance statistics. Matters worsened significantly in November, when Rozier was among more than 30 individuals taken into custody by the FBI as part of a crackdown on illegal gambling operations.
Following his arrest, the NBA placed Rozier on immediate, unpaid leave. It is worth noting that other prominent figures, such as Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and former player Damon Jones, were also implicated in the sweep. Although Rozier successfully challenged his forced leave in February—with an arbitrator ruling that such measures are typically reserved for domestic or child abuse cases—he has not participated in any games for the Heat this season.
The Allegations Against Rozier
The federal case centers on a 2023 matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans during his tenure with the Charlotte Hornets. Before tip-off, a $14,000 bet was placed on Rozier to underperform; shortly after, he exited the game after playing only nine minutes, citing a foot injury.
Federal authorities allege that Rozier communicated his intent to leave the game early to an associate, Deniro Laster. The FBI claims that Laster subsequently sold this inside information to bettors for approximately $100,000. Rozier has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. During a court appearance last December, he entered a plea of not guilty to charges of money laundering and wire fraud, and he was subsequently released on a $3 million bond.
Strategic Roster Move
While the timing of his release coincides with his legal troubles, the move is also driven by personnel management. Friday serves as the final opportunity for teams to waive players on expiring contracts. By clearing this roster spot, the Heat gain the flexibility to sign a replacement player before Sunday, bolstering their depth ahead of the upcoming play-in tournament.
