New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole took a major step in his recovery, making his first rehab start on Friday since undergoing Tommy John surgery in early 2025. Pitching for the Double-A Somerset Patriots, Cole threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing 3 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 3 on 44 pitches. Reports indicate his fastball velocity reached 96 mph in the first inning.
His outing included some challenges, as he surrendered a walk, an RBI double, and a home run in the second inning. Cole's rehab process has progressed smoothly this year, including spring training starts. The Yankees have now started his 30-day rehab clock, which could be extended with additional 10-day periods common for Tommy John recoveries.
The former Cy Young winner expressed satisfaction with his current status, stating, "I have no complaints. The stamina was good. The pitches are fine right now." The Yankees, who hold an 11-9 record, anticipate his return to the major league rotation, potentially in June, to bolster a staff currently led by Max Fried and Cam Schlittler.
