Official Appeal Filed
The French national team has officially requested that FIFA cancel the yellow card issued to Michael Olise during their recent encounter with Paraguay. Guy Stéphan, the assistant manager for Les Bleus, confirmed that the team is actively pursuing a reversal of the decision made by referee Ilgiz Tantashev during France’s hard-fought 1-0 victory this past Saturday.
Controversial On-Field Incident
The incident occurred in the closing moments of the match during a physical altercation between the Bayern Munich playmaker and Paraguay’s Matias Galarza. Despite the referee's decision to caution Olise, television replays provided clear evidence that the French midfielder merely grabbed Galarza’s jersey after the Paraguayan player collapsed to the pitch, mimicking the effects of a facial blow.
The officiating throughout the match was widely criticized, with Tantashev’s performance being particularly scrutinized. In a harsh assessment of the referee's display, the French sports publication L'Equipe awarded the official a rare rating of 1 out of 10.
Potential Impact on the World Cup Campaign
The stakes for the French side are significant. Under current disciplinary rules, should Olise receive another booking in the upcoming quarter-final clash against Morocco, he would face an automatic one-match suspension. Such a penalty would rule him out of a potential semi-final appearance.
Given the 24-year-old's pivotal role and impressive form during the tournament in America, his absence would be a substantial setback for manager Didier Deschamps. Addressing the media on Monday, Stéphan acknowledged that the appeal process is currently "ongoing," highlighting the team's commitment to clearing the player's disciplinary record before the next stage of the competition.
