A Major Shakeup in Boston
The Boston Red Sox have officially announced a significant restructuring of their coaching staff. After suffering through a difficult 10-17 opening to the 2026 campaign, the organization has fired manager Alex Cora along with five other coaches. Chad Tracy, who has been managing the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, is set to step in as the interim manager.
The Coaching Changes
In addition to Cora, the following staff members were relieved of their duties:
- Peter Fatse, Hitting Coach
- Kyle Hudson, Third Base Coach
- Ramón Vázquez, Bench Coach
- Dillon Lawson, Assistant Hitting Coach
- Joe Cronin, Major League Hitting Strategy Coach
Notably, Jason Varitek, the team’s game planning and run prevention coach, was also removed from his current role but has been transitioned to a different position within the club, likely due to his historical status as a two-time World Series champion and former team captain.

Red Sox principal owner John Henry released an official statement regarding the difficult decision:
“Alex Cora led this organization to one of the greatest seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and for that, and the many years that followed, he will always have our deepest gratitude. He has had a lasting impact on this team and on this city. He has led on and off the field in so many important ways. These decisions are never easy, but this one is especially difficult given what Alex has meant to the Red Sox since the day he arrived.”
A Struggling Roster
Despite entering the season with championship aspirations, the Red Sox faltered early, losing eight of their first ten games. Even a recent 17-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles was not enough to save the staff, as management had clearly reached their decision prior to the win. Currently, the team sits in last place in the AL East, trailing the first-place New York Yankees by 7.5 games.
The team’s struggles have been exacerbated by the significant underperformance of key players. Star pitchers like Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello have faced early-season challenges with high ERAs, while offensive contributors, including Roman Anthony and Trevor Story, have also struggled to find their rhythm.
Cora’s Tenure and Legacy
This move marks the end of Alex Cora’s second stint with the club. His first tenure included the historic 2018 championship season, where the team finished with an impressive 108-54 record. While Cora was later sidelined by a league-wide investigation into sign-stealing, the organization brought him back following the 2020 season. Despite a successful 2021 campaign, the team has struggled to advance in the postseason in recent years, leading to the current state of uncertainty surrounding the franchise’s direction.
