A Turbulent Day in Anaheim

The Toronto Maple Leafs managed to clinch a 5-4 overtime victory against the Anaheim Ducks on March 30, 2026. However, the game itself took a backseat to the dramatic pre-game announcement that General Manager Brad Treliving had been relieved of his duties.

Head coach Craig Berube delivered the news to the team during a meeting, creating an atmosphere of disbelief within a locker room already struggling with a lackluster campaign. Reflecting on the sudden change, veteran forward John Tavares stated: «It’s just shocking. I think whenever you receive the news, it’s shocking, and you’re just disappointed».

Solidarity on the Ice

Despite the instability in the front office, the team displayed a unified front from the opening whistle. Max Domi immediately engaged in a fight with Radko Gudas just three seconds into the game, a calculated act of retaliation for a knee-on-knee hit Gudas delivered to captain Auston Matthews earlier in the month, which sidelined the star for the remainder of the season.

Craig Berube, who was brought on by Treliving in 2024, praised his team’s ability to remain focused. «They were inspired tonight for sure. I thought [they] competed extremely hard tonight throughout the whole game... everyone was involved, engaged», the coach noted after the victory.

Analyzing Treliving’s Legacy

Treliving’s tenure, which began in May 2023, was defined by aggressive roster moves that yielded mixed results. His primary coaching decision was hiring Berube to instill a more physical identity. He also executed significant moves, including the long-term signing of William Nylander to an eight-year, $92 million contract, and the acquisition of gritty veterans like Max Domi, Chris Tanev, and Brandon Carlo.

While the 2024-25 season saw the team reach 108 points and win a first-round series, the current campaign faltered significantly following the Olympic break. The team’s inability to maintain form, combined with the high cost of trade-deadline acquisitions, ultimately led to the organization’s decision to seek a «new course».

The Players Take Responsibility

While MLSE President Keith Pelley emphasized the necessity of a fresh direction, the players largely blamed themselves for the season's failure. Defender Morgan Rielly expressed his perspective on the situation: «How I feel is that it’s on the players. It’s for where we’re at in the standings and things happen when your team’s not where you want it to be. And unfortunately, that’s the business».

William Nylander agreed, noting that the loss felt personal: «It just shows that what we did this year wasn’t good enough. That sucks because that comes on the players too, so it’s not just his fault».

Looking Ahead

For Berube, the departure of Treliving is a difficult personal moment. «He gave me an opportunity here, and I feel like we let him down this year», Berube admitted. As the team approaches the final seven games of the season, uncertainty lingers, but the coaching staff remains focused on maintaining professionalism, leaving the future of the organization's leadership to be determined in the coming months.
