Path to Recovery

Tarik Skubal is preparing to take a significant step toward his return to the Detroit Tigers' starting rotation. Manager A.J. Hinch confirmed on Friday that the pitcher is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment this Sunday, approximately one month after undergoing a procedure to address a loose body in his pitching elbow.

Due to unfavorable weather forecasts in other locations, Skubal will pitch for the organization's Single-A affiliate in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Regarding the decision, Hinch stated: «The Caps will get a pretty good starting pitcher for Sunday, and we'll get him started competitively with his outing. We're excited for that.»

The Innovative 'Skubal Scope'

The medical procedure, performed on May 7, involved removing a particle described by agent Scott Boras as being the size of a lima bean. Boras, who dubbed the technique the «Skubal scope,» has been optimistic about the recovery process, suggesting it is far less invasive than traditional arthroscopic surgery.

«We really feel that the buildup will be, really — he will not lose the buildup that he had, you know, prior to the surgery. And he'll be able to return to performance at just a much, much earlier stage,» Boras noted in a previous interview. If the rehabilitation goes as planned, Skubal could potentially rejoin the major league team much sooner than initial projections for similar surgeries suggested.

Trade Speculation and Future Outlook

As the MLB trade deadline on August 3 approaches, Skubal’s status remains a point of interest for the league. With the Tigers currently trailing in the AL Central standings, the star pitcher has frequently been mentioned in trade rumors. Given his performance—boasting a 2.70 ERA and a 0.946 WHIP prior to the injury—he would be a high-value asset for any team looking to bolster their pitching staff for a postseason run.

Despite the rumors, it remains uncertain if Detroit is prepared to part ways with their ace. The team still has a window of time to potentially improve their standing before the deadline.

Updates on Other Pitchers

In addition to Skubal's update, Hinch mentioned that fellow starters Casey Mize and Justin Verlander are also progressing through their own recovery schedules. Both pitchers are set to throw off the mound this Saturday as they continue their respective paths back from the injured list, though no definitive return dates have been established for either player.
