After being sidelined for a few games, Los Angeles Dodgers sensation Shohei Ohtani returned to action with renewed intensity. During Saturday's dominant 15-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, the dual-threat star turned a routine hit into a chaotic, run-scoring sequence often referred to as a “Little League home run.”
The Play at the Netting
In the eighth inning, facing pitcher Alek Manoah, Ohtani hammered a changeup into the right-field corner. While the ball initially appeared headed for the stands, it struck the protective netting along the first-base line and bounced back onto the field. Angels outfielder Jo Adell mistakenly assumed the ball was dead and ceased his pursuit, but the officials kept the play active.
Ohtani sprinted around the bases, eventually reaching home plate after a relay throw went wide. While officially recorded as a triple combined with an error by Adell, the sequence effectively functioned as a home run, adding three runs to the Dodgers' tally.
Controversy and Ground Rules
Angels manager Kurt Suzuki challenged the play, suggesting fan interference should have resulted in a ground-rule double. However, the stadium's updated ground rules clarify the situation:
“A ball that strikes the front of the netting, even if it hits the camera, is live and in play unless it becomes lodged or is otherwise deemed unplayable.”
Suzuki acknowledged the frustration, stating, “Before the nets were down the line, that ball bounces into the stands and it's two bases. But we just challenged, we thought maybe it might have hit a fan and it didn't, obviously. So, you know, unfortunate.”
Ending the Slump
The momentum continued as Mookie Betts followed with a solo homer, and Ohtani later contributed a three-run double. Ohtani concluded the game with five RBIs, signaling a potential end to his recent hitting struggles. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts noted the positive turnaround, commenting, “We were hoping to get a reset with a couple days off, and I think that’s what happened. I think he’s just feeling better and quicker with the bat.”
With this win, the Dodgers have secured four straight victories, placing them at the top of the NL West standings.
