A Spontaneous Choice to Re-enter Singles
Tennis superstar Serena Williams recently opened up about the contemplation process she underwent before deciding to join the singles field at the current Wimbledon tournament. Although she was already set to compete in doubles with her sister Venus, the prospect of playing a singles match required extra deliberation.
With a wild card spot held open for the 23-time Grand Slam winner by the All England Club, the 44-year-old athlete explained her thought process during a media session on Sunday:
«I thought I should really take this opportunity. Who knows if I’ll ever make it here again. This could be it. I was like, ‘What’s wrong with me, Serena? What are you thinking? Are you nuts? Like you really should do this.’ People live to be an athlete. I have this great opportunity to showcase what I do, what I do best, I suppose. Yeah, I think ultimately I was like that is pretty cool, so I should do it.»
Returning to the Iconic Grass
Williams has been away from competitive tennis for the most part since her final appearance at the 2022 U.S. Open. Her previous showing at Wimbledon in 2022 saw her exit in the opening round against Harmony Tan. Since then, she has characterized her transition away from the professional circuit as an “evolution” rather than a definitive retirement.
The decision to join the draw was a last-minute affair, as she revealed she was unsure about committing right up until the deadline. “I had until Monday to decide. I think it was like Sunday. I just wasn’t sure up until then. Honestly, I’m still not even sure, but we’ll see,” she remarked.
First-Round Expectations
As a seven-time champion at the event, Williams admits that her approach to this year's tournament is unlike any other in her career, noting a shift in her personal expectations.
Her return to the spotlight is slated for Tuesday, where she will compete against 20-year-old Australian player Maya Joint. Williams expressed that she has done her homework on the younger talent:
«Yeah, actually I know her. I’ve watched some of her videos. I’m sure she knows my game,» she noted.
Tuesday’s high-stakes schedule at Centre Court includes several notable matches:
- Iga Swiatek (Defending Champion) vs. Taylor Townsend
- Taylor Fritz vs. Jack Draper
- Serena Williams vs. Maya Joint
