A New Dimension in the USMNT Offense

Ricardo Pepi has long been recognized for his goal-scoring prowess, netting 45 goals over the past three years for PSV Eindhoven despite limited starting opportunities. However, during the recent friendly against Senegal at Bank of America Stadium, the 23-year-old Texan demonstrated that his value to the U.S. Men’s National Team extends well beyond finding the back of the net.

While U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino describes Pepi as a “killer,” the striker acted primarily as a facilitator against Senegal. His technical vision was on full display when he executed a clever, no-look pass to unlock the defense, setting up the opening goal for Sergiño Dest. Later, he provided a perfectly weighted ball that helped Christian Pulisic secure a goal in the eventual 3-2 victory.

Overcoming Setbacks on the Road to the World Cup

Pepi’s inclusion in the 26-man roster marks a significant milestone, especially after the heartbreak of missing the 2022 World Cup squad. Reflecting on that disappointment, Pepi noted, «Being left off was obviously not nice, but I feel like using that in a good way helped me be in this World Cup. It helped me grow and mature.»

His path to this tournament was further complicated by a series of physical challenges. Injuries, including a knee issue and a fractured forearm that sidelined him for six weeks earlier this year, hampered his momentum. Despite these hurdles, Pepi remained focused on his rehabilitation and preparation.

Rising Expectations and Future Ambitions

As the World Cup approaches, Pepi’s versatility makes him a vital asset for Pochettino. While Folarin Balogun is widely considered the primary striker, Pepi’s ability to create chances from nothing gives the team a crucial tactical alternative. His recent form—scoring in five consecutive appearances—has also caught the eyes of major European clubs, with potential interest from the Premier League lingering after a previous transfer move fell through.

Looking back at his journey from FC Dallas to the Eredivisie, Pepi acknowledges his growth since his early, difficult stint in the Bundesliga. His national team teammates, including Pulisic, have lauded his persistence. «He missed out last time, but you can see he's continued to work really hard,» Pulisic said. «He continues to keep a high level, scores goals, does all the things well, and that's why his time is now.»

When the final word on his roster selection came via a message from Pochettino, the moment was deeply personal for the striker. Sharing the news with his father, who was his youth coach, Pepi finally secured the spot he had been fighting for years to attain.
