A Major Boost for the Friars

Providence has received a significant commitment from Clyde Walters, a talented four-star small forward. Originally part of the 2027 recruiting class, the 6-foot-6 standout from Overtime Elite in Georgia has opted to reclassify into the 2026 class. This move allows him to join the Friars' roster for the upcoming season.

Previously ranked 85th nationally in his original class, Walters will see his recruitment standing adjusted following his early transition to the collegiate level. The Birmingham, Alabama native recently completed an official visit to the Providence campus and intends to remain there to participate in summer training sessions.

The Decision to Join Providence

Reflecting on his choice, Walters emphasized the personal and professional growth opportunities at Providence. «Providence felt like the best place for me to grow as a player and as a person,» Walters stated. «The coaches believed in me from the start, and I could see the vision they had for the program. It felt like a place where I could compete at a high level and continue developing my game.»

Regarding his decision to reclassify, Walters explained that he felt prepared to accelerate his development: «I felt like I was ready for the next challenge. Reclassifying gave me the opportunity to push myself against older competition and start the next chapter of my basketball journey sooner.»

Building on Established Trust

A key factor in his commitment was his long-standing bond with coach Bryan Hodgson. The two have maintained a connection since Hodgson’s tenure at Alabama. Walters noted the consistency of the coaching staff throughout his recruitment, stating, «I’ve known Coach Hodgson since he was at Alabama, so there was already a strong relationship and level of trust there. Him and his staff made me feel like a priority.»

What Friars Fans Can Expect

When asked to describe his playing style, Walters highlighted his versatility on the court:

  • Scoring and Playmaking: Capable of creating opportunities for himself and his teammates.
  • Defensive Intensity: Brings high energy and competes hard during every possession.
  • All-Around Impact: Focuses on rebounding and contributing in multiple facets of the game to secure victories.

Addressing the fans, Walters added, «I’m excited to be a Friar and can’t wait to get to work. You’re getting a player who’s going to compete every day, play with passion, and give everything he has for the program.»

Proven Performance

Walters enters the program with an impressive track record, having excelled on the Nike EYCL Circuit with Alabama Fusion. During the spring, he posted averages of 19.9 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.8 steals per contest. His recruitment saw strong interest from several notable programs, including Syracuse, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, and Ole Miss, before he ultimately chose Providence.
