Workforce Reductions in Portland
The Portland Trail Blazers organization initiated a substantial round of layoffs this Tuesday. Reports indicate that approximately 70 employees were affected by the move. Among those departing the franchise is long-time team reporter Casey Holdahl, who confirmed his exit via social media.
Management's Perspective on Restructuring
Team president Dewayne Hankins officially described the personnel shifts as a necessary phase of organizational restructuring. In a statement regarding the changes, Hankins noted:
«Today, as part of our plans to position the organization for the future, we made the difficult decision to restructure several areas of the business. These changes impacted talented people who have helped shape the Trail Blazers over many years. We are deeply grateful for their contributions, their leadership and the care they showed every day for our team, our fans and the Portland community.»
Hankins further emphasized that the current priority of the front office is providing support to the affected staff during this transitional period to ensure long-term stability.
Dundon’s Frugality Under Scrutiny
This latest round of cuts adds to the growing tension surrounding the ownership of Texas billionaire Tom Dundon. Since taking control, Dundon has faced significant backlash for various cost-saving measures, including a notable incident where two-way players were not permitted to travel with the team during the early stages of the playoffs. While general manager Joe Cronin later attributed the travel omission to a “miscommunication,” the incident drew widespread criticism.
Dundon addressed his management style during a recent appearance on the Game Over podcast. He acknowledged that his approach often differs from standard NBA practices, stating:
«I just made a mistake. I just don’t understand the league. In hockey, we don’t travel with extra people because we’re not on vacation. We’re here to win, so we don’t want the distraction. The NBA seems to live with those distractions. It’s not how I think about it.»
Defending the Ownership Strategy
Dundon has remained firm despite negative media coverage, including reports of staff being asked to vacate hotel rooms early during a road trip to avoid fees. He argued that his decisions are focused on creating a specific culture. GM Joe Cronin continues to defend the owner, suggesting that public perception regarding Dundon's willingness to invest is often inaccurate, particularly concerning upcoming coaching hires.
Regarding the future of the franchise in Portland, Dundon dismissed speculation about relocation. He pointed to his tenure with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes as evidence of his commitment to keeping teams in their current markets, stating that he has no intention of moving the Trail Blazers.
