The Green Bay Packers have joined the list of teams showing interest in veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins as a potential backup option. This news comes after the Los Angeles Rams were previously linked to the experienced signal-caller.
Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst confirmed on Monday that Cousins is among the players the team has evaluated following the loss of backup Malik Willis in free agency. Currently, Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord are positioned as the primary reserves behind starter Jordan Love on the depth chart.
"Yeah, we've discussed a lot of those options," Gutekunst stated when asked specifically about Cousins. "Obviously that's a guy who's got a lot of pelts on the wall in this league, so we've certainly discussed all those kind of things."
There is a prior connection, as Packers head coach Matt LaFleur served as the quarterbacks coach for the Washington franchise during Cousins's first two NFL seasons (2012-2013).
Cousins, who started eight games last season as a backup after Michael Penix Jr. suffered an ACL injury, brings extensive experience. Over his 14-year career, he has amassed 44,700 passing yards with 298 touchdowns and 131 interceptions.
