A Decisive Tactical Oversight
During a high-stakes Sweet 16 matchup on Thursday, Nebraska’s season came to a painful conclusion, marred by a significant unforced error against Iowa. With the outcome hanging in the balance, the Cornhuskers committed a rare mental lapse, taking the court with only four defenders.
Iowa exploited the situation immediately. Following an inbounds play, the Hawkeyes executed a fast-break that resulted in an "and-one" layup, effectively sealing their 77-71 win.
The Breakdown in the Final Minute
The incident occurred with 58.8 seconds remaining on the clock and Iowa clinging to a 71-68 lead. Following a timeout, Iowa had possession under its own basket. Junior guard Kael Combs, triggering the inbound, quickly spotted teammate Alvaro Folgueiras completely unguarded across half-court. Because Nebraska had failed to field a full complement of five players, Folgueiras was left entirely unchallenged.
Combs delivered a precise pass down the court, allowing Folgueiras a clear path to the rim. Although Nebraska's Berke Büyüktuncel managed to catch up and commit a foul as the shot was released, the layup dropped. Folgueiras then sank the subsequent free throw, extending Iowa's lead to 74-68 and essentially ending Nebraska's comeback hopes.
Coach Hoiberg Takes Responsibility
Following the game, Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg did not deflect blame, taking full ownership of the personnel error.
«Put that one on me. It was a miscommunication. I’m the head coach, and that one’s on me.»
When questioned about whether the officials should have delayed the inbound until Nebraska had five players on the floor, Hoiberg admitted he was unsure of the specific rules regarding a defensive shortage.
«I’ve never been in a situation like that,» Hoiberg noted. «I know they always count to make sure there’s not six. I don’t know the rule on that with four.»
Looking Ahead
With this victory, the ninth-seeded Iowa advances to the South regional final, setting up a clash against No. 3 Illinois for a spot in the Final Four. Meanwhile, Nebraska reflects on a historic season that saw the program secure its first two NCAA tournament victories. Despite these milestones, the team departs the tournament grappling with the sting of its late-game collapse against the Hawkeyes.
