A Significant Step Toward Expansion

The NBA has officially initiated the process of potentially returning to the Seattle market and establishing a new franchise in Las Vegas. According to reports, the league’s Board of Governors recently cast a vote in favor of conducting formal investigations into expansion possibilities within these two cities.

This decision was widely anticipated following earlier indications that the topic would be presented for a vote during the spring Board of Governors meeting. While this development does not finalize the addition of new teams, it provides the league with the authorization to move forward with necessary evaluations.

Financial Scope and Timeline

The financial implications of such an expansion are substantial. Industry experts suggest that entry bids for new franchises could reach between $7 billion and $10 billion. Given these figures, the board's decision to proceed is viewed as a calculated move to explore significant revenue growth.

Looking ahead, there are several procedural hurdles remaining before the league can officially grow to 32 teams:

  • The league expects to hold a final vote on the expansion proposal later this year.
  • Approval requires a supermajority, meaning at least 23 of the league's 30 current team owners must support the motion.
  • Reports indicate that interest among ownership groups is gaining traction.

Should the expansion proceed as planned, the NBA is targeting the 2028-29 season for the debut of the new teams. Both potential franchises would likely be placed in the Western Conference, necessitating a broader realignment of the league's existing structure.

Context for the Potential Host Cities

For Las Vegas, this represents an opportunity to secure its first NBA team. The city has rapidly evolved into a major professional sports hub, currently hosting NHL, WNBA, and NFL franchises, with an MLB team also in development.

Seattle, meanwhile, is seeking to reclaim its NBA history. The city has been without a team since the Supersonics relocated to Oklahoma City to become the Thunder following the 2007-08 season. The last time the NBA underwent an expansion process was in 2004, which saw the introduction of the Charlotte Bobcats, now known as the Hornets.
