A Historic Achievement on the Slopes

American skiing sensation Mikaela Shiffrin continues to cement her legacy in the sport. Following her triumphant performance at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, Shiffrin reached another milestone on Wednesday by clinching her sixth women’s World Cup title, tying the prestigious all-time record.

To secure the overall victory and finish ahead of her closest rival, German skier Emma Aicher, Shiffrin needed to place within the top 15 in the giant slalom. Demonstrating her trademark composure, she delivered the necessary performance to seal the title.

Matching the Legendary Moser-Pröll

With this latest trophy, Shiffrin pulls even with Austrian skiing icon Annemarie Moser-Pröll, who set the benchmark of six World Cup titles during the 1970s. The path to the record was unique for both athletes:

  • Moser-Pröll’s era: She dominated the sport with five consecutive wins between 1971 and 1975 before taking a hiatus to care for her ailing father. She later returned to competition to secure her sixth title in 1979.
  • Shiffrin’s journey: Her wins have been distributed across her career. She captured three straight titles from 2017 to 2019, followed by back-to-back victories in 2022 and 2023. After a brief dip in the standings in 2024 and 2025, she reclaimed the top spot this season.

Looking Toward the Future

This achievement serves as a high point in a stellar 2026 season for Shiffrin, which also included a gold medal in the slalom at the Milan Cortina Olympics. This victory provided a powerful redemption arc for the skier, following her challenging experience at the 2022 Beijing Games, where she did not reach the podium.

With her confidence and momentum at an all-time high, the focus now shifts to the 2027 season. Shiffrin is expected to compete for a seventh title, which would see her surpass Moser-Pröll. Ultimately, her sights may be set on the absolute record held by Marcel Hirscher, who secured eight World Cup titles during his illustrious career.
