The University of Michigan men's basketball team secured its first national championship since 1989, defeating UConn 69-63 in Indianapolis. This clash between two historic programs resulted in the most-watched NCAA men's basketball title game in seven years.
According to Nielsen data, the game averaged 18.3 million viewers across TBS, TNT, truTV, and HBO Max. This marks the highest average viewership for the event since 2019. The broadcast peaked at 20.4 million viewers during the final stretch of the game.
The 2026 tournament overall saw a significant increase in viewership, averaging 10.9 million viewers across all broadcast partners. This represents a more than 7% rise from the previous year and stands as the second-most-watched men's tournament since 1994.
Michigan's path to the title included victories over Tennessee and Arizona before facing a tough challenge from the defending champion UConn. Despite shooting a season-worst 38.2% from the field, Michigan's defense and perfect free-throw shooting in the final minutes secured the victory for coach Dusty May's team.
