Morant to Undergo Procedure for Elbow Injury

The Memphis Grizzlies officially confirmed on Tuesday that point guard Ja Morant will not return to the court for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign. Morant, who has been sidelined since January 21, continues to suffer from persistent discomfort in his left elbow, diagnosed as a sprained UCL.

Medical experts have recommended that the star player undergo a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection to facilitate the healing process of the ligament. According to team statements, this medical intervention will effectively end his season. However, medical staff anticipates a full recovery, with Morant expected to be ready for the start of the 2026-27 season.

A Challenging Stretch of Seasons

This injury prematurely concludes a difficult year for Morant, who managed to appear in only 20 games this season. His availability has become a significant concern for the franchise: since his impressive All-Star performance in the 2022-23 season, he has participated in only 79 total games over the last three years. His recent history includes:

  • 2023-24 season: Limited to just nine games due to a combination of a suspension and a shoulder injury.
  • Prior season: Missed 32 games resulting from various physical setbacks.

Team Outlook and Future

With a current record of 24-47, the Grizzlies are positioned 9.5 games behind the final Western Conference play-in spot, leaving the organization with little incentive to rush their franchise cornerstone back to the floor. While there was chatter surrounding a potential trade involving Morant during the February deadline, the team ultimately decided against moving him.

As Morant approaches his 27th birthday before his next competitive NBA appearance, the focus shifts toward his long-term health. The team hopes that this extended recovery period will help him return to the form that once established him as one of the league's most exciting young talents.
