A Historic Milestone at a Historic Venue
The McLaren Formula 1 team is preparing for a significant achievement this weekend as they head to the Monaco Grand Prix, marking their 1000th start in the world championship. It is a poetic return to the site of the team's debut, which took place at the same iconic street circuit back in 1966 under the guidance of founder Bruce McLaren.
Commemorative Design and Special Details
To honor this journey, the team has revealed a unique livery for their MCL40 cars, featuring a striking combination of metallic papaya orange and anthracite. The sidepods will prominently display the number 1000 to highlight the occasion. This special aesthetic will be showcased at both the Monaco event and the following Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Regarding the intricate design of the car, the team noted: «Across the livery there are nods to our rich history with hidden gems recognising important milestones, from our first race, victories and championship wins to the triple crown and our world record pit stop.» In addition to the vehicles, drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will sport custom overalls designed to match the team's celebratory theme.
Reflection on Resilience and Future Growth
The spirit behind the design focuses on the core identity of the racing stable. According to the team, «The livery symbolises the message that McLaren never quits. As the team approaches the 1000th Grand Prix milestone, it highlights the stories and the work it took to get to the anniversary, championing moments where the team was not only successful, but also the challenges it faced and how it came out stronger.»
Legacy on Display
On Thursday, the team is set to hold a special exhibition featuring the McLaren M2B—their inaugural F1 car—side-by-side with their current challenger. The event will feature leadership including CEO Zak Brown and team principal Andrea Stella, alongside current drivers and various former McLaren Grand Prix winners.
Reflecting on the achievement, Zak Brown stated: «Lining up on the grid to race McLaren’s 1000th grand prix in Monaco this year provides a perfect opportunity to recognise our rich history in motorsport. We’re only the second team to reach this incredible milestone, so what better moment to reflect on our past, our present and our future.»
