The Unstoppable Force
Geno Auriemma’s UConn Huskies are currently a juggernaut in women's college basketball. Entering the NCAA tournament with a perfect 34-0 record, the team has proven dominant, even after the departure of star player Paige Bueckers. Their recent run included decisive victories in the Big East tournament, defeating Villanova 90-51 and Creighton 100-51.
Throughout the season, UConn has dismantled ranked opponents by an average margin of 20 points, with only a narrow 72-69 victory against Michigan in November posing a real threat. Despite their dominance, the question remains: can they secure their 13th national title? The team's primary challenge may stem from a lack of high-level competition during their relatively weak Big East schedule, leaving questions about how they will perform against a battle-tested opponent in a high-stakes, single-elimination environment.
UCLA: The Primary Challenger
UCLA stands out as the most significant threat to UConn’s throne. With a 34-1 record, the Bruins have endured a much more grueling path, facing 13 ranked opponents and winning 12 of them. Their dominance in the Big Ten, highlighted by a crushing 96-45 victory over No. 9 Iowa, has earned them respect even from Auriemma himself.
«If you said UCLA is the No.1, I would say, 'Wow, they’re really damn good, and I would have absolutely no problem with that,'» Auriemma noted after the Bruins' championship performance.
Led by All-Americans Lauren Betts and Kiki Rice, UCLA’s statistical profile rivals that of UConn, particularly given their superior strength of schedule.
The SEC Powerhouses
Beyond UCLA, the SEC provides several formidable opponents capable of pulling off an upset.
- Texas: Entering the tournament on an eight-game winning streak, Texas has proven they are elite on both ends of the floor. Their SEC tournament championship run, punctuated by a 78-61 win over South Carolina, demonstrates that they are hitting their peak at the right time.
- South Carolina: Despite falling to Texas in the SEC title game, the Gamecocks remain a premier program. Boasting a 31-3 record and a deep roster featuring five All-SEC selections, they are coached by the seasoned Dawn Staley, who has three national titles to her name.
- LSU: Though they have struggled slightly more against top-tier competition, LSU possesses the championship pedigree necessary for a deep run. Led by veteran guard Flau’jae Johnson and coached by Kim Mulkey—a four-time NCAA champion—the Tigers have the experience and leadership to remain a threat on the national stage.
