Building a Strong Foundation
Indianapolis Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon has expressed complete faith in quarterback Daniel Jones, noting that he holds the full backing of the coaching staff, his fellow players, and the team's ownership. The decision to secure Jones with a two-year, $88 million contract was largely driven by his seamless professional relationship with head coach Shane Steichen, a dynamic that Irsay-Gordon feels has occasionally been missing in the past.
«That chemistry that a quarterback needs to have with their head coach. I don’t want to name any names, but there are situations where your head coach doesn’t believe in your quarterback, I mean, you’re kind of screwed. I think Shane and Daniel really align,» Irsay-Gordon stated, as reported by the Indianapolis Star.
Leadership and Team Identity
According to Irsay-Gordon, Jones embodies the essential leadership qualities required for the franchise. She views the quarterback position as the equivalent of a CEO for the football team, helping to establish a clear identity and providing the coaching staff with a concrete understanding of their operational capabilities on the field.
Support from the Locker Room
The owner emphasized that the decision to retain Jones was not made in isolation; the players themselves were vocal about their desire to see him return. Irsay-Gordon highlighted the importance of valuing the locker room's perspective, noting that the players possess unique insights into the team's dynamics.
«The rest of the team wanted Daniel back, too. I think that’s really important to listen to what the team is saying, too, because they know everything. People can laugh, but the players know, and I think their input is important. Daniel, he’s an amazing teammate,» she added.
Overcoming Adversity
Despite concerns regarding Jones' recovery from a torn Achilles, Irsay-Gordon remains optimistic about his future performance. She praised his work ethic and determination to perform at an elite level. She noted that his desire to prove himself—often referred to as having a "chip on his shoulder"—serves as a positive catalyst for his continued growth and success with the organization.
