Credential Conflict Following Injury Coverage

Veteran sports journalist Scott Agness, known for his comprehensive coverage of the Indiana Pacers and Fever through his Fieldhouse Files platform, has had his media credentials stripped by the Fever organization. The decision stems from his recent reporting regarding Caitlin Clark’s health status prior to a game against the Chicago Sky.

Agness had reported that Clark’s late absence from the May 20 matchup was part of a "strategic management plan" rather than a severe injury. The team subsequently informed Agness that his access was being revoked due to the alleged "spread of inaccurate and unsubstantiated information."

The Dispute Over Reporting

The conflict escalated after the organization requested a retraction of the initial report. Agness maintained his stance, stating:

«While I understood her position, I have a trusted source and stand by my reporting. And that I would update the story to whatever coach Stephanie White said during her pregame availability.»

Although Agness updated his story to include Coach White’s comments—who stated that Clark was managing a back issue and denied it was a strategic rest plan—the team proceeded with the credential revocation. Caitlin Clark later clarified to the media that the final decision to sit out was personal, based on consultations with her medical team and mental health professionals.

Industry Backlash

The move has drawn sharp criticism from the professional media community. The WNBA chapter of the Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA) issued a formal statement condemning the organization's actions:

  • The PBWA objects to any reporter losing access for the act of reporting.
  • Efforts to prevent journalists from informing the public reflect poorly on the team and the league.
  • Such actions run contrary to the best interests of the public and the industry.

A Pattern of Friction

This incident marks the second time Agness has faced credential issues with Pacers Sports & Entertainment. He has been barred from covering the Pacers since 2024 following a dispute regarding media parking during the All-Star Game—a claim the reporter firmly denies. Despite repeated attempts to resolve the situation and seek a "fresh start" with the organization, Agness notes that his efforts to engage in dialogue have gone ignored.

As of now, there is no formal reinstatement process, and representatives for the Fever, the WNBA, and Clark’s management have provided no further comment on the matter.
