Substantial Financial Penalty for Misconduct
Adolfo Daniel Vallejo is set to forfeit nearly 50% of his prize earnings at the French Open following a series of sexist remarks directed at umpire Ana Carvalho. The disciplinary action comes after his match against French player Moïse Kouamé, where Vallejo claimed that a male official would have possessed the necessary authority to control the partisan crowd.
Roland Garros tournament director Amélie Mauresmo confirmed that the athlete was issued a fine of $76,000. During a press briefing, Mauresmo emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating:
«This is clearly unacceptable. Once again, such remarks have no place here.»
Context of the Controversial Statements
The controversy ignited when Vallejo suggested that the intense atmosphere required a male referee to successfully manage spectators. As reported by ESPN, Vallejo remarked: «It has to be refereed by a man, because it's a very demanding crowd and you need a lot of strength to go against the crowd.»
During the match, Vallejo also accused his opponent, Kouamé, of stalling tactics. Despite staging a significant comeback after trailing by two sets, Vallejo ultimately lost the grueling five-set encounter, with the final set ending in a 7-6(8) tiebreak.
Damage Control and Public Reaction
Once the severity of the backlash became apparent, Vallejo attempted to clarify his stance through social media. He posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter) insisting that his comments were directed solely at the performance of the specific official during that match rather than being a broader statement on gender capabilities. He wrote:
«I never spoke about women in general, I spoke about the referee specifically, who didn't handle the crowd at any point during the match. That said, I also didn't say that I lost because of her. I congratulated the opponent and it's normal for the crowd to cheer for the home player.»
This post was subsequently deleted. Meanwhile, Kouamé’s run in the tournament concluded shortly after his victory over Vallejo, following a four-set loss to Alejandro Tabilo.
