Kevin Mays, a former Cal State Bakersfield men's basketball player and temporary assistant coach, is awaiting trial on charges including pimping and human trafficking, according to an ESPN report.

Mays, 32, was arrested in September and is being held without bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 13. He faces 11 criminal and misdemeanor charges, including possession of automatic firearms, intent to sell drugs, and possession of over 600 images of child pornography.

Mays has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He played for CSUB from 2014-16, helping the team reach its first Division I NCAA tournament. He later worked as a player-development coordinator and temporary assistant coach at the university.

The investigation began after head coach Rod Barnes received an anonymous tip alleging Mays was involved in sex trafficking across multiple states. The tip identified an alleged victim, whom police determined was 23 years old. Barnes forwarded the email to human resources, triggering the probe.

Police allege Mays used a university account to rent a car for the alleged victim's sex work. Following a sting operation, text messages indicated his "involvement and control" over her activities.

The school announced in September that Barnes and the athletic director would no longer be in their roles. The athletic director has since sued the university for alleged retaliation.
