High Demand for Basketball Showdown in D.C.
The 2026 NCAA men’s basketball tournament is set for an electrifying Sweet 16 round this Friday at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Among the most highlighted contests is the face-off between top-seeded Duke and Rick Pitino’s St. John’s Red Storm. Fans hoping to witness these high-stakes games in person should prepare for a significant financial investment.
Record-Breaking Ticket Costs
According to data provided by Gametime as of Monday afternoon, the average price for tickets to the East Regional—which also features a clash between No. 2 UConn and No. 3 Michigan State—has reached $644. This marks the second-highest average price for a regional round in tournament history.
The current record remains held by the 2025 Atlanta regional, which saw an average price of $659 just four days before tip-off. Similarly, the entry-level price for this year’s D.C. event is the second-most expensive ever, starting at $504, trailing only last year’s $721 starting point in Atlanta.
Remarkably, other historically expensive regional matchups were priced at least $200 lower than the current figures for the Washington, D.C. games.
Why Prices Are Soaring
The premium cost for these tickets is largely attributed to the caliber of teams participating. The East Regional is packed with powerhouse programs, including:
- Duke: Always a premier draw in college basketball.
- UConn: Currently pursuing their third championship title in the last four years.
- Michigan State: Led by Tom Izzo, who is aiming to secure the program's first Final Four appearance since 2019.
- St. John’s: Making their first Sweet 16 appearance since 1999 under the direction of legendary coach Rick Pitino.
Beyond the historic rivalry and legacy of these programs, geographical factors are also at play. Washington, D.C. serves as an accessible destination for the fan bases of these universities, further driving demand for the limited available seating.
