Dallas Wings head coach Jose Fernandez knew rebuilding the team would be challenging after a combined 19-65 record over the past two seasons. He was chosen to restore the team to competitive play, but he’s already seeing obstacles.

Only three games into the regular season, Fernandez publicly criticized his players for selfishness and lack of accountability. Following Thursday’s 90-86 loss to the Minnesota Lynx, he addressed earlier comments about “emotions surrounding minutes and starting,” stating, “There’s selfishness in this locker room.”

Fernandez elaborated, “It’s real talk and it’s accountability. You gotta look in the mirror and be accountable on how you play. Really good teams don’t care about minutes or shots; they care about winning.”

The Wings dropped to 1-2 after the loss, having won their season opener against the Indiana Fever before losing the next two close games. Despite the narrow margins, Fernandez is unhappy with his players’ early-season mindset.

He did not name specific players but hopes his message will resonate. The Wings show more promise than in recent years, but reaching their potential requires unity between coach and players.
