A Strategic Distraction

While Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) held its high-profile debut on Netflix this past weekend, UFC CEO Dana White appears to have orchestrated a move to divert public focus. On Saturday, as the MVP card—headlined by the clash between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano—was underway in Los Angeles, White initiated an Instagram live stream from the UFC Apex. During this broadcast, he revealed that former two-division champion Conor McGregor, who has been absent from the octagon since July 2021, is set to face Max Holloway in a rematch at UFC 329 on July 11.

The Reaction from MVP Leadership

The timing of the announcement did not go unnoticed by those leading the charge at MVP. Jake Paul, the founder of Most Valuable Promotions, did not hold back his thoughts during the post-fight press conference, interpreting the UFC's move as a sign of competitive insecurity.

«That just shows how pressed they are. Little insecure boys trying to piggyback off our event and trying to put some news over top of us. Not gonna work, buddy.»

Ronda Rousey, who secured a swift 17-second armbar victory over Gina Carano to headline the night, echoed Paul’s sentiments. She viewed the move as an unintended validation of MVP's status as a legitimate market rival.

«It’s kinda catty. But it also shows that they see MVP MMA as a threat that they would do it in that moment,» Rousey stated. «It’s also a compliment because it elevates MVP MMA and makes their declaration that they see us as a real rival.»

Ngannou Remains Unfazed

The timing was particularly pointed given the long-standing tension between Dana White and former heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. However, Ngannou, who was in the midst of his own walkout for his fight against Philipe Lins when the news broke, dismissed the significance of the UFC's tactics.

«What the f* do I have to do with that? So I should stop my walkout and look what is going on with that?» Ngannou remarked. «I don’t care, bro. Let’s move on. Life goes on.»

Ngannou went on to secure a first-round knockout victory over Lins, maintaining his undefeated streak that has remained intact since 2018 and extending his current winning streak to eight fights.
