A Relaxed Approach to High Stakes

During Sunday’s practice at Ball Arena, the atmosphere surrounding the Colorado Avalanche felt remarkably calm. Rather than the suffocating tension often associated with the Western Conference Final, the team displayed a sense of collective ease. For the players, this session served as both a well-deserved reward for their deep postseason run and a tactical reset before the series opener on Wednesday.

Injury Updates and Roster Stability

The practice session saw some positive developments regarding player availability. Sam Malinski returned as a full participant after a two-game absence, and Josh Manson was back on the ice, providing a much-needed boost to the team's defensive depth. While key players Cale Makar, Brent Burns, and Artturi Lehkonen remained sidelined, head coach Jared Bednar expressed optimism regarding their potential return for Game 1.

«It should be fun this time of year. It’s really the reason we play. Nobody is playing for the 82-game grind. They are playing for the playoffs,» noted coach Jared Bednar.

Managing Mental Fatigue

The Avalanche have enjoyed an unusual amount of rest this postseason, following a sweep of Los Angeles and a five-game victory over Minnesota. Bednar is acutely aware that at this stage of the playoffs, managing emotional energy is just as important as physical conditioning.

Veteran forward Nazem Kadri emphasized the necessity of mental breaks, stating, «Those days you aren’t playing are really important to try to detach as much as possible, and then when the time comes, dial your focus back in.»

The Illusion of Dominance

Despite a strong 8–1 postseason record, the team remains grounded in the reality that playoff hockey is rarely as simple as the final scores suggest. Defenseman Brock Nelson highlighted the volatility of the competition, explaining that players must maintain a «short memory» and a fresh perspective every single day to handle the intense adrenaline swings.

Bednar reinforced this perspective by reflecting on the team's 2022 championship run, noting that while spectators often view successful campaigns as easy, the internal experience is one of constant survival. As the team prepares for the upcoming challenge, the primary objective is to maintain their intensity without becoming overwhelmed by the pressure of the postseason.

The Colorado Avalanche will kick off the Western Conference Final on Wednesday, May 20, at Ball Arena.
