A Frustrating Opening Day
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Twelve months removed from holding a solo lead on a Masters Sunday, Bryson DeChambeau encountered a starkly different reality at Augusta National. The golfer concluded his opening round of the 2026 tournament at 4-over par, sitting significantly behind current leaders Sam Burns and Rory McIlroy, who both carded impressive 5-under scores.
Following his round, a visibly disappointed DeChambeau addressed the media, attempting to process a performance that unraveled with unexpected speed.
«Everybody has an ability for weird things to happen, and today I just did not have my irons under control, which is weird,»he remarked.
The Collapse on the Back Nine
For the majority of the day, DeChambeau appeared steady, maintaining an even-par score through the first ten holes. After an early bogey on the second hole, he immediately balanced his scorecard with a birdie on the third. However, his momentum vanished at the 11th hole.
After a solid drive, DeChambeau's approach shot landed in a greenside bunker. The subsequent struggle to escape the hazard resulted in a triple bogey, a setback that severely damaged his chances for the day. Explaining the error, he noted,
«Bunker was softer than I anticipated.»A final bogey on the 18th solidified his 4-over standing as he headed to the scorer’s building.
The 3D-Printed Club Experiment
A significant point of discussion leading up to the tournament was DeChambeau’s decision to include a 3D-printed 5-iron in his bag. While unconventional, the equipment is rooted in technical research and adheres to USGA regulations. DeChambeau explained that while the printing process for the club takes roughly eight hours, achieving the full USGA-conforming specifications requires approximately a day and a half of work.
He utilized the custom club only once during his Thursday round on the seventh hole, where he flew the green and had to navigate out of a bunker to save par.
Looking Ahead
With his next tee time scheduled for 1:20 p.m. on Friday, DeChambeau faces a steep uphill battle as the leaders continue to pull away. While the prospect of securing a victory this year appears slim, the golfer will need to conduct a thorough analysis of his Thursday performance to refine his approach for future appearances at Augusta.
