A Subtle Adjustment Leads to Improved Performance
At the Masters in Augusta, even the smallest technical details can significantly impact a professional golfer's performance. Brooks Koepka recently disclosed that he discovered an error in his driver's configuration following his opening round.
The Setup Mismatch
Koepka utilizes the Titleist GT3 driver, a club that offers adjustable settings to influence ball flight characteristics, such as fade, draw, or neutral trajectories. The golfer typically relies on the “A1” standard setting for his game. However, following his first round on Thursday, Koepka realized that his club had been inadvertently adjusted to the “B1” position, which results in a flatter ball flight.
Reflecting on the discovery, Koepka remarked, “No one noticed it. Switching back to A1, which is what we usually had it [set to], [I am] just driving it better.”
Impact on Scorecard and Statistics
The discrepancy in the club’s settings appeared to correlate with his performance metrics on the course:
- Round 1: Koepka lost 0.41 strokes off the tee and hit seven fairways, finishing with a score of 72.
- Round 2: After correcting the driver to his preferred setting, he gained 0.86 strokes off the tee and hit nine fairways, resulting in a 69.
These adjustments have left Koepka at 3-under for the tournament, currently tied for 13th place as he competes in his first major since joining the LIV Golf circuit.
Looking Ahead
Despite the technical hiccup, Koepka is maintaining an optimistic outlook regarding his form. “Ball striking has been really good this week. Putted better today. Short game has been kind of iffy,” he noted. “But, yeah, I like the way I'm playing right now. Just need to be a little bit more aggressive.”
