A New Chapter in Boston Racing

The 130th running of the Boston Marathon is set to begin this Monday, featuring a highly competitive group of elite athletes. Both defending champions, Sharon Lokedi and John Korir, are returning to the course with hopes of securing consecutive victories in their respective categories.

Women's Elite Field: Defending the Title

Sharon Lokedi, who established a new course record of 2:17:22 last year, faces stiff competition. Among those challenging for the top spot are Kenyans Irine Cheptai and Loice Chemnung, along with Ethiopian runners Workenesh Edesa and Bedatu Hirpa, all of whom boast impressive personal bests.

In terms of home-field advantage, Emily Sisson appears to be the most promising American prospect. Having set a national record of 2:18:29 while placing second at the 2022 Chicago Marathon, Sisson is making her highly anticipated debut at the Boston course this Monday.

It is worth noting that some elite runners, such as 2025 New York Marathon winner Hellen Obiri, have chosen to compete in the London Marathon rather than Boston this year.

Men's Competition: The Pursuit of Victory

John Korir returns as the favorite to claim a second straight win. His track record is formidable; although he won last year with a time of 2:04:45, both he and fellow Kenyan runner Benson Kipruto have previously demonstrated speed capable of breaking the 2-hour and 3-minute mark.

The field also features other familiar faces, including Tanzanian athlete Alphonce Felix Simbu and Kenya's Cyprian Kotut, who shared second place in last year's event.

With American Conner Mantz withdrawing from the race last month, eyes are now on Galen Rupp. Rupp remains a significant contender for the U.S., holding the distinction of being the most recent American man to secure a top-three finish at a major marathon, having placed third in Chicago in 2021.

Race Schedule

The event is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. ET. The women's race will lead the day's proceedings, followed by the men's competition.
