AUGUSTA, Ga. — Geoff Yang, an Augusta National member and longtime USGA rules official, has taken on the pivotal role of chairman of the competition committees for the Masters. In this position, he serves as the tournament's ultimate rules authority, responsible for course setup and adjudicating any rules disputes, though he largely operates behind the scenes.

During his first press conference, Yang fielded a question about what might surprise club co-founder Bobby Jones today. He suggested Jones would be amazed by modern driving distances and athleticism, noting the course has adapted to maintain the challenge.

Yang's role is critical, as rules controversies at the Masters have lasting impact, from Arnold Palmer's 1958 drop to Tiger Woods's penalty in 2013. The Augusta National philosophy is to prevent issues before they escalate. Yang now carries the responsibility of interpreting the rules and upholding the tournament's integrity, guided by the spirit of its founders.
