A Memorable Discovery
In a hobby often dominated by discussions of investment returns and market trends, there are still moments that capture the pure joy of collecting. Recently, Robbin, a grandmother from Mesa, Arizona, experienced such a moment alongside her three grandsons, Dylan (15), Harrison, and Steven (10), while opening a box of the newly released Topps Chrome Football.
The family didn't just find an impressive card; they uncovered the ultimate prize: the Josh Allen 1-of-1 Gold Shield Autograph redemption.
The Morning Rush
The family's journey into card collecting began a few months prior when Robbin pulled out old storage bins of baseball and football cards for Dylan to explore. The excitement quickly turned into a shared hobby, leading the family to visit local shops and events together.
When the new Topps Chrome Football set was announced, the boys were eager to get their hands on it. Following a 6:30 A.M. reminder from Dylan, Robbin headed to Hot Corner Sports Cards in Mesa. Arriving an hour before opening, she secured a hobby box and several blaster packs, enforcing a strict rule: the packs would remain sealed until the boys returned home from school.
Unveiling the Treasure
Once the boys were home, Robbin encouraged them to take their time and enjoy the experience. It was 10-year-old Steven who discovered the rare card. Robbin recalled the moment, noting that the boy initially thought he had simply found a ticket to meet the NFL star. However, upon returning to the shop, the owner confirmed the gravity of their find, describing it as the "Willy Wonka golden ticket" of the set.
«They just looked at me and said, 'You have the Willy Wonka golden ticket,'» Robbin shared.
Philanthropy and Future Prospects
Despite being dedicated Pittsburgh Steelers fans, the family recognized the rarity of the 1-of-1 card. They have decided to auction the piece through Fanatics Collect, with plans to split the proceeds equally among the three grandsons. Far from killing their interest, this "massive pull" has only deepened their passion for the hobby.
The auction will also feature a 2024-25 Finest UCC Lionel Messi Auto-Black Foil 1/1. Notably, all proceeds from the Messi card, including the buyer’s premium, will be donated to Project Sunshine. Kevin Lenane, VP of Marketplace at Fanatics, praised the collectors for their philanthropic spirit, noting that such moves are refreshing in a profit-focused industry.
The Expansion of Fanatics Collect
While landing a high-profile pull like the Josh Allen shield is a significant event, Lenane explains that redemptions represent only a tiny fraction of their business. The platform's success is largely driven by organic growth, with their auction volume expanding nearly tenfold over the past 18 months.
The upcoming auction lineup is set to be one of the most significant in the industry, featuring legendary items such as:
- 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky Rookie Card (PSA 9, Auto 10)
- 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems (PMG) Green Dennis Rodman
- 2025 Topps Chrome Superfractor Autographs for LeBron James and Tom Brady
- 1999 Pokémon Base Set Shadowless 1st Edition Charizard
For Robbin and her grandsons, the financial gain is only part of the story. The lasting memory of the experience is what they truly value, serving as a reminder that the heart of collecting lies in sharing these special moments with loved ones.
